About this Event
Opiates, including fentanyl, lead to over 100,000 annual overdose deaths in the U.S. and the risk increases when street drugs such as xylazine and nitazenes are added to the mix. Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) face a lack of understanding by family and friends and fewer opportunities for employment and social interaction. The resulting shame, hopelessness, and isolation can also cause reluctance to seek treatment. But research shows that this bias and stigma can be reduced with medications in opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment. Psychoeducation about MOUDs can also lead to improved attitudes toward people with OUD and increase their desire to pursue a MOUD provider. This presentation will provide a complete overview of the MOUD for the practitioner and will cover current information on dangerous opioid additives. New strategies for dealing with the stigma of OUD will also be examined.
