About this Event
Gender identity is one’s concept of or innate sense of self in relation to their gender, whether it be female, male, neither, both, or questioning. Patients who identify as transgender, genderqueer, genderfluid, or gender questioning are at a significantly higher risk for housing instability, suicidal ideation and behaviors, substance use, and are at risk of being victims of bullying and sexual violence. Despite the need for mental health services, transgender and nonbinary youth often fail to receive services. Unfortunately, many health care providers feel unprepared to provide culturally sensitive care for the transgender, nonbinary, and LGBTQ+ community. This presentation aims to sensitize prescribing psychologists about the unique challenges we face when treating members of the transgender and non-binary community.
